Flow Blue was first made starting sometime in the early 19th century and produced throughout for more than another century.
Flow Blue was produced in England and was intended to emanate characteristics strikingly similar to the much more expensive Chinese porcelain of the period. Chinese porcelain was a luxury item of the period and English pottery makers created flow blue as similar and far less expensive product. Flow Blue is now collected world wide

The potteries developed a type of earthenware which looked comparable to the Chinese porcelain in the unique white hue they were able to produce. The earthenware was then decorated with Chinese inspired designs and was sold at a much more affordable price. The English potteries used a transfer printing method that was invented sometime around 1775 to apply their oriental designs to the earthenware. The Staffordshire region had more than one hundred potteries producing this ware which was originally pioneered by Josiah Spode. Josiah Wedgwood is generally recognized as the creator of Flow Blue pottery. The early flow blue designs were mostly oriental although other sceneries were produced as well.

While some believe that flow blue was discovered quite by accident, most experts think that the blurring and flowing technique used to fashion the designs was quite deliberate. Today many of these works produced are still in high demand and very valuable.

There are literally hundreds of known patterns, some of the more collectable patterns with the notable heavy flow include; Scinde, Oriental, Cashmere, Shapoo or Chapoo, Pelew, Manila, and many more.
